Tell Congress: Fair Funding for Lung Cancer Research!

$25 million for lung cancer research is included in the House defense spending bill for fiscal year (FY) 2024, but it’s not a done deal.

Congress is still working to finalize appropriations for FY 2024, which began on October 1.

Lung cancer patients can’t wait.

Complete the form below to send a message to your congressional representatives asking them to pass a final spending deal that includes $25 million for the Lung Cancer Research Program at the Department of Defense.

Lung Cancer Research Program (LCRP)

  • Established in 2008 with an Appropriation of $20 million.
  • The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program's (CDMRP) Lung Cancer Research Program (LCRP) is the ONLY dedicated lung cancer research pipeline for early detection and treatment for our military and the public who have a higher risk for the disease.
  • The Department of Defense funds these programs in support of the military, but the research benefits all of us.
  • Over its history, the LCRP funding has fluctuated from year to year.
  • Many promising research proposals do not get funded.
  • The result is missed opportunities for breakthrough treatments to fight lung cancer.

Lung Cancer Facts

  • An estimated 238,340 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed this year and an estimated 127,070 will die from the disease.
  • The Veterans Health Administration estimates that 900,000 veterans are at risk for lung cancer due to exposure to toxic elements while on duty.
  • Over 26,000 individuals a year are treated for lung cancer in the military health system.

Why This Matters

  • Share your personal story!
  • Your support maintains this critical research pipeline
  • Ensures that lifesaving breakthroughs continue to help me, our active military and veterans and the millions of men and women impacted by the disease

As a constituent and someone who cares deeply about the future of lung cancer patients, I am counting on you to finish your work on fiscal year 2024 appropriations bills without further delay and support at least $25 million for the Department of Defense (DoD) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program's (CDMRP) Lung Cancer Research Program as approved in the House’s FY24 Defense Appropriations Bill. Thanks in part to Congress’ past investments in lung cancer research, significant advances have been made in lung cancer treatment, prevention, and early detection. However, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States, and current therapies are not working for many patients. We urgently need more federal investments in research to make more progress for everyone impacted by lung cancer. I join the Lung Cancer Action Network (LungCAN) in asking you to work in a bipartisan manner to pass a final FY 2024 spending package that includes $25 million for the Lung Cancer Research Program at the Department of Defense as approved in the House Defense Appropriations FY24 Bill last year. The lung cancer community is counting on Congress to finalize FY 2024 appropriations by the current deadline and include this critical funding. Further delays will cause additional disruptions to the medical research that we need to find new treatments and diagnostics. Thank you for your consideration of my concerns. Melissa M.FayettevilleNC
